Opal Cansler

May 31, 1936 — February 24, 2018

Opal Cansler was born June 1, 1936 in Kilgore, TX to the parentage of John and Ida B. Mitchell Amerson.

She was raised in Kilgore and received education at Kilgore Public Schools. She attended C. B. Dansby High School where she was a member of the band and played the flute, and was a member of the Dansby Tigerette Drill Team, she was also a member of the Ladies Basketball team. Ms. Opal moved to Los Angeles, California in 1953 where she continued her education and graduated from Freidmont High School in 1954.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and served him faithfully. She joined New Birth Fellowship Church Fellowship Church under the leadership of Gary L. Walker.

Opal was a loving and devoted Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She never met a stranger, she loved telling jokes and was very passionate about people. She was the Matriarch of her family and will be dearly missed. She was employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District where she served faithfully for over 30 years.

Opal was married to Willie Joe Wheeler where three beautiful children were born.

She entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 24, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lester P. Amerson.

Opal leaves a legacy of wisdom and love for her family to cherish. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memories her two daughters, Willethia Nisey Wheeler of Kilgore, Texas; Pamela Wheeler of Los Angeles, California and son Samuel Wheeler of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; Special Sisters Edna Mae Brown and Ruthie Bowers along with a host of relatives and friends.
