Mrs. Evelyn Vernice Garrett Washington was born September 11, 1940, in Cass County, Texas to the late Cain Garrett and Everett Woods Garrett. She graduated from North Chapel High School in 1959. She received a degree in Elementary Education from Texas College, Tyler. Evelyn accepted the Lord at a young age at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary.
Evelyn fell in love with and married the late Dewitt Washington Jr. on June 8, 1963. To this union of 57 years one child was born—Sonia Lynn Washington Moore. In August of 1963, they moved to Brownfield, Texas, where she taught elementary school at Phillis Wheatley and Colonial Heights for 33 years. While in Brownfield, Evelyn joined the Greater New Hope Baptist Church where she served in several capacities.
After moving back to Kilgore in 1998, she reunited with the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Secretary and Missionary President.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings JoNell Washington, Royce Garrett, Cecil Garrett, and Olethia Garrett.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memories: daughter Sonia Lynn Washington Moore (Rodney), Lubbock, TX; grandson Rodney Dewitt Moore; granddaughter Ciara Lynn Moore; brother Cain Garrett Jr. (Deborah) of Tiverton, RI; sisters India Timms of Kilgore, and Loretta Simon of Forney, TX; uncle James Earl Woods (Wilma) of Kilgore; sisters-in-law Ernestine Warren and Amanda Scott of Tyler, TX and Susan Garrett of Lufkin, TX; brothers-in-law Calvin Roy Washington of Kilgore and Cleveland Lee Washington of Tyler, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
