Erma Jean Sheffield Hicks Young
, 78, was born June 24, 1942 to the late Alonza and
Elizabeth Sheffield. She was the seventh of eleven children. Erma received her education in
Kilgore, TX from North Chapel. She accepted Christ at an early age and was reared in Kilgore
Church of God.
On August 9, 1957, she married the late Warren D. Hicks. Warren and Erma were married 16
years prior to his death. In this union, three children were born.
After marrying and relocating to Dallas, Warren and Erma united with Bon Air Missionary
Baptist Church. Erma served on the usher board. Erma remarried Eddie Young in 1975 that
also preceded her in death.
Erma worked for Eastman Kodak, Sun Oil Gas Company and then became self-employed
embarking upon her own domestic cleaning business for high-end families. Her clients
resided in the Claridge in Dallas.
Erma, affectionately known as “MuDear”, is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hicks,
9 siblings, James Sheffield, Ermell Sheffield, Ruben Sheffield, Clara Cameron, Wesley
Sheffield, Lonzo Sheffield, Jr., Earnestine Taylor, Allen Ray Sheffield, and Allen Roy Sheffield,
and great granddaughter Zoreigh Gracelyn.
She leaves to cherish two daughters, Ella Andrews (Pierre) of Dallas, TX, daughter Vanetta
Hicks Hensley of Forney, TX, one son Renodda Hicks (Cathy) of Arlington, TX; one grandson,
Rodney Cornelious, Jr., three granddaughters, Yinessa Lee (AY), Stephanie Brown, and
Courtney Hensley; 8 great grandchildren, Roland, Demere, Ali, Kristian, Chandler, Fatimah,
Carys and J’Mari. Her only surviving sibling is J.B. Sheffield (Carolyn) of Balch Springs, TX.
MuDear to some and Aunt Jean to others also has a host of “adopted” children from Pleasant
Grove, particularly the classes of 1980, 1985 and 1986; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.
