Her Life Story

MRS. ELENA TOLBERT JOHNSON

Place of Birth: Mrs. Elena Tolbert Johnson was born March 1, 1933 to Lawrence and Eula Cameron Tolbert in Kilgore, Texas. She departed this earthly life on March 31, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Tolbert, mother, Eula Cameron Tolbert, and five siblings: Bennie Tolbert, Olantha Tolbert, Prentis Tolbert, Lenon Tolbert, and Broyles Tolbert.

Education: She attended North Chapel High School.

Holy Matrimony: Elena was united in marriage to Lavern Johnson for fifteen years. They reared three sons: Lawrence, Preston and Richard Johnson.

Employment: Retired from Vertex Corporation, Kilgore, Texas.

Church Affiliation: Elena united with Mt. Pleasant CME Church at an early age. As a faithful prayer warrior and Stewardess, she served in various capacities.  She was faithful in her attendance of Sunday worship, Sunday School, and Bible Study for many years. Elena was also known for her prayers and loved to hear her favorite hymn, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand".

Family: Those left to cherish her memory: her three sons, Rev. Preston (Calva) Johnson of Rowlett, TX,  Lawrence Johnson and Richard E. Johnson both of Kilgore, TX; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Tolbert, of Kilgore, TX, and Eva Jean Tolbert, of Compton, CA; seven grandchildren, Troy Hooper, Deandra Johnson, Wakisha Johnson all of Kilgore, TX, Charla (Kermit “J”) Dow of Houston, TX, Andrew Johnson of McKinney, TX, Sarah (Kevin) Cox and Crystal Johnson both of Tyler, TX; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
